175-lbs. of violence summed up in one article.
It’s nice we have a bare knuckle weight class that exists in both BKFC and BYB, so without further ado, Here is the year in review for BKFC’ Middleweight and BYB’s Light Heavyweight division, or simply put, 175 pounds.
BKFC
Champion: David Mundell
Defeated Danny Christie via KO on October 12th.
I’m not sure if it's the fact that BKFC has so many fighters and not enough people in the front office that can’t keep these guys in the ring enough, but this was yet another example of a champion we saw once this year. It was a phenomenal performance when we finally did see him, stopping the tough as nails Danny Christie in the second round after handing out a walloping in the first round. There are plenty of interesting avenues Mundell could take in 2025, lets just hope it doesn't take another 12 months to see him.
Contenders:
Mike Perry, “The King of Violence” only made it into the squared circle once this year when he knocked out Thiago Alves in the main event of KnuckleMania IV. There’s no word on his return and if he does end up coming back there's been no indication they ever intended to actually put him in a fight with some championship implications.
Dakota Cochrane, ok say it with me now, made just one appearance this year. However, to his credit, it was a good one. A nasty shot that landed right on the eye socket of Jeremie Holloway and sent him writhing in pain on the canvas.
BYB
Champion: Gregoris Cisneros
Defeated Rene Rodriguez via KO on January 18th
Defeated Cub Hawkins via KO on Aug 10th
One of the craziest fights of the year saw Cisneros beating sitting champion Cub Hawkins in a bout that featured nine total knockdowns. The Venezuelan looked great, scoring seven of those nine knockdowns. Although the tough work for Cisneros is just starting, as he is slated to defend his title against the legend Barrie Jones.
Contenders:
You can’t tell the story of this division in 2024 without mentioning the former champion Cub Hawkins. He won the vacant title against Ryan Jett and on a quick turn around defended it against Cisneros. For all the scrutiny I’m giving the BKFC side of this weight class, all praise should be on Hawkins for keeping this division in the headlines, even if he suffered a defeat in one of them.
