A champion crowned and a night of knockouts in Newcastle.
On November 2nd in Newcastle, England, Anthony “Agi” Faulkner and Dawid Oscar would square off for the inaugural BKFC European Championship. This fight was absolutely ridiculous, it's like they were both forced to leave their defence in the locker room or something because both of them threw caution to the wind and brought it from the very beginning. Faulkner scored a knockdown, then Oscar scored one, then it was Faulkner again who started to get the edge, scoring three to finish out the round. Right when the bell rang, Faulkner landed a big shot that sent Oscar crashing to the canvas in very rough shape.
While the referee did take a point to start the second round, it was to no avail as the first flurry of punches Faulkner threw ended the bout by bouncing Oscar’s head off the canvas. Whether that shot at the end of the round was dirty or not, I do think the fight was over long before that, there were several points you could’ve stopped the bout in the first. Faulkner is now the inaugural european heavyweight champ and in a top heavy division like heavyweight it’s not out of the realm of possibility we see him in a meaningful contenders match in the next year or so to break into the top five.
The co-main event saw Connor Cooke win by unanimous decision over Matt Hodgson. While the fight itself was a banger, it’s unfortunate that Cooke had missed weight and wasn;t eligible to win the title. However the fans still got to see a great scrap between the two.
It seems like every month we get a new candidate for Knockout of the Year but I’m telling you I’m not overhyping it. Ben Bonner put Lewis Keen out cold and had his face turned like he’s eaten a sour candy. With the previously unbeaten fighter laying stiff on the ground the victorious Bonner went and shared a can of Forged Irish Stout with BKFC co-owner Conor McGregor. This won't be the last you’ve heard of this knockout, just wait until the end of year awards.
Other notable winners include the now 3-0 Karl Thompson and the 4-1 Bart Krol.
