Two new champions crowned to cap off a thrilling night of action.
BYB 28: Bourbon Street Brawl was a massive success with all but one fight ending in a knockout, we also saw two new champions crowned and the first Brit vs Brit fight since BYB’s acquisition of BKB. Here are a few of my thoughts on the fights and then the official press release from BYB as well.
Gustavo Trujillo KOs Ike Villanueva
AND NEW. Wow. Trujillo is so powerful I don’t know anyone in the BYB roster that can compete with him, seriously that's how good he is. And what's scary is he’s only getting better. Without seeing him actually fight you might assume that a guy who is now 6-0 with six first round stoppages, could just rely on his raw power and swing wildly going for broke from the very beginning. But he’s not, good boxing fundamentals and the attacks to the body he used last night against Villanueva shows his evolution in the sport. Villanueva had the heart of champion getting up after being knocked down several times, but Trujillo’s time is now and its possible that there's no one to stop him for a long time.
Helen Peralta KOs Monica Medina
Peralta showed that the wait for her return was worth it. This is just her second bare knuckle fight since 2019, and last night she looked as good as she ever has. Medina is a former world champion who put on three all-time tilts with Paty Juarez, and Peralta made it look easy. Stopping her in the first round and claiming the vacant BYB Featherweight Title. Ranked at #6 on BK Nations pound for pound list, she is sure to see a boost in the ratings.
James Connelly scores first KO win of career
Respect to Mark Tiffin for taking the fight on short notice, but unfortunately for him, Connelly was just too much. A knockdown in round one and the eventual finish in round two saw Connelly pickup the first KO win of his career. This opens up all kinds of opportunities on the BYB roster for Connelly. The winner of LT Nelson and Barrie Jones perhaps? Or the winner of Cub Hawkins and Gergoris Cisneros? How about a rematch with Jimmy Sweeney if he makes his return to bare knuckle? See what I mean! This was a very important win for Connelly as it keeps him right in the mix of the elite of bare knuckle.
